Yau Caregivers,

Our first term is behind us. This year, our school year is separated into five terms. We planned the school year for the possibility of moving to fully remote instruction due to Covid-19. As of now, that is unnecessary. And we will continue to monitor the situation and work with KBC to determine the best plan to keep staff, students and the community safe. We need to remind everyone to follow the KCS Covid-19 response guidelines. The guidelines include keeping students home if they show any sick symptoms, wearing a mask at all times at KCS (Gr.3 – Adults), and focusing on healthy personal hygiene practices.

Our parent-teacher interviews were very successful, with only a small percentage of families not making it to see their students’ teachers. Our staff will continue to use multiple means of communication to keep you informed of your students’ progress. Please keep in close contact with your students’ teachers as communication is vital. As Covid-19 cases rise across the province and country, we need to prepare ourselves for the possibility that we may return to remote studies.

As you take a closer look at your students’ report cards, students must complete all the work assigned to them on remote instruction days. The days’ students are not at KCS are not days off. Instead, teachers are planning meaningful activities to help the students grow and develop. In term 1, some caregivers were disappointed with their students’ report cards, and the most significant contributing factor was unfinished work during the remote days. Please continue to support your students at home with quiet places to work, develop a routine for remote work times, and encourage them to reach out to KCS when they need help with the remote day assignments.

Our high school report cards and parent-teacher interviews will happen this week. If you have not done so already, high school caregivers reach out to the high school team to book your time to meet with the teachers to see and hear about students’ progress.
The KCS team welcomes Desiree Brown to our team. Welcome, Des!
Our K4/K5 and Miss Crystal’s class were out in the territory last week. They were fortunate to have some days on the beach, digging clams and cockles. It was wet but successful. Thank you to our teachers, Miss Deanna, Resource Stewardship, and the skippers involved in making these excellent learning opportunities happen for our youth. These field trips are not optional, as they are an essential part of the students’ learning at KCS. If you need assistance in any way to make these trips happen for your students, please let us know, and we will help make them a reality for your family.

Thank you for your continued support of KCS,

Justin Magnuson
