Yau Caregivers,
Our 2020-21 school year is off to a great start. First off, I want to thank families for making school a priority. Klemtu families take schooling and education very seriously. Our student attendance has been superb, with over 90% of our students present so far. Keep up the excellent work. Also, our students and families are taking our remote days very seriously. Our students and parents continue to challenge our teachers, asking for more work and assistance with completing the work assigned.
We have been working with our high school students to communicate our expectations for remote days. On remote days high school students should be spending between three to six hours working on their assignments and projects. Our high school students have all identified that they need to improve in this area. Families, please encourage our high school students to set aside this time to accomplish this goal.
With a new school year comes new opportunities for student learning. Experiential learning is a vital component of the learning model at KCS. Our staff have delivered on three experiential learning opportunities this year. Mrs. Fraser completed her unit on bears with the Grade 1 & 2s by visiting Mussel Inlet and getting an up-close and personal view of Grizzly Bears. Miss Loretta’s class extended their learning about multiplication, place value and microplastics with a trip to Disju. Robbie Duncan, Deanna Duncan, and Jennifer Mason were able to share the history of the Bighouse and the importance of DIsju to the Kitasoo/Xai’Xais nation. Finally, in collaboration with Resource stewardship, our Senior High School team ventured up Laredo Channel to view and explore the traditional fish traps that exist in the territory.
Thank you to our teachers, Miss Deanna, Resource Stewardship, and the skippers involved in making these excellent learning opportunities happen for our youth. These field trips are not optional, as they are an essential part of the students’ learning at KCS. If you need assistance in any way to make these trips happen for your students, please let us know, and we will help make them a reality for your family.
Finally, we made some adjustments to the calendar for the last two weeks of October. Please see those explanations attached, as well as the new version of the October calendar attached.
Thank you for your continued support of KCS,
Justin Magnuson
