Hello, I’m Deanna Duncan, and I have the privilege of being the leader of the Supporting Emerging Aboriginal Stewards (SEAS) program at Kitasoo Xai’xais Community School. In this role, I work closely with our youth, helping them connect with the land, the waters, and our cultural teachings so they can become the environmental stewards of tomorrow.
Growing up in the Kitasoo Xai’xais Nation, I’ve always felt a deep responsibility to our traditional knowledge and the natural world around us. Through the SEAS program, I aim to empower our students to recognize their own potential to make a positive impact on our environment. Whether through hands-on learning, fieldwork, or cultural teachings, I encourage students to take pride in their role as caretakers of our ancestral lands.
I’m passionate about blending traditional indigenous knowledge with modern environmental practices, and I work to ensure our youth have the skills and knowledge to be leaders in both our community and the wider world. Every day, I’m inspired by the curiosity, enthusiasm, and passion that our students bring to their learning, and I am honored to be a part of their journey.
Outside of the SEAS program, I’m deeply involved in a variety of community initiatives that focus on cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, supporting indigenous rights and promoting youth sports. I believe that by nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, we are helping to create a brighter, more sustainable future for our people and the lands we hold dear.
Sharing knowledge of Kitasoo Xai’xais traditions and values is of high importance. Empowering youth by preparing them with knowledge of the past, practicing in the present, to carry on in the future!
