Trip to Hakai

May 18 – 20, 2018 the high school students and three staff chaperones had an amazing trip to Hakai on Calvert Island. Students traveled with a group from Bella Bella with SEAS coordinator Johanna and the Youth Worker. Students from Klemtu stayed in the lodge and enjoyed awesome meals every day, some presentations by some of the top researchers in marine biology and coastal ecosystems that were working at the lab during our visit. Students learned how to collect plankton and then use the microscope and keys to identify common zoo and phyto-plankton. Students learned about ‘pyropia’ seaweed – the edible seaweed collected in this area – and learned how to organize a transect and quadrant study on the beach to identify species present.Students also did a “Trreasure Hunt” to find as many species of aquatic animals as possible off the Hakai dock with the Bella Bella Students.
